Paper maché
created out of drawings on paper
My work stems out of the clogs I decided on as my object for the drawing project. The clogs are not only a symbol of my Hollandish background, but a symbol of colonialism and of man’s travelling nature. I started to transform the drawings of the clogs I made into actual clogs. From there it transforms into boats and bats. The bats were the animal I chose for the drawing project.
Bats are fascinating creatures, because of their ability to find their way through hearing the wavelengths of sound. Bats are also creatures that fly, meaning that they travel around, just like humans. For the human aspect of the drawing project, I incorporated human qualities into the clogs - the boats symbolising human participation and the nature of both animals & humans to move around.
The plastic-and metalwork are both extensions of human qualities and influences on life and the body. The plastic work speaks on the mind-set of humans and the influencability of the mind through conscious and unconscious ways. It also touches the issue of how man is willing to go to extreme extents to transform himself to be accepted by “civilisation”.
The metalwork raises questions on the importance of the imminent to humans and how man is on a continuous journey of discovery for the new without appreciatingt hat which is already in front of them. It is also not depicting anything specific, so that the imminent can always start to have an influence on it.

Imminence –
not only about to happen, but the inevitable. People in search of the imminent.
This work
does not only speak of that which is yet to happen, but it comments on how
people are searching in vain for the newest things in life, instead of just
being. People take the small and beautiful in life for granted, they do not
notice that which no one notices any more. Small patterns in nature or the way
in which light highlights objects and softens or hardens surfaces.

do not only influence the minds of young girls/children in a subconscious way,
it can also be seen as a source of influence in the same way that mass media
has an influence on our daily lives. There is an unconscious and conscious
brutality through mass media and its influences are not to be avoided.
